Welcome!

I work to better understand the relationship between water table, climate, sea level, and ice sheets at a regional to global scale. I develop and use computer models to simulate changing water table over thousands of years. I also develop and use tools for landscape analysis.

News

March 2025: Jessica Fayne visited our department and gave an extremely informative seminar about remote sensing of the water cycle. It was wonderful to connect with Jessica and to think about ways that our different approaches to understanding water can be useful to one another's research.

March 2025: New publication! The Water Table Model paper is finally here. It has been a long road for this one, and I am looking forward to all of the exciting research ahead with the WTM now that it is finally out there. The paper includes a full description of the model and also proof-of-concept simulations of the North American water table both in the present, and 21,000 years ago.

December 2024: Mohammad and I attended AGU in Washington DC and presented our research ( 1, 2, 3). I spent a lot of time learning about the research possibilities of the SWOT satellite, and enjoyed both seeing old friends and making new connections.

October 2024: Roger Creel came for a visit and shared his fascinating research at our departmental seminar. We also spent a lot of time talking about new research ideas - I'm excited to make those ideas a reality together.

September 2024: I am pleased to welcome Xuezhi Cang to my research group! Xuezhi will be joining us as a postdoctoral researcher. His background is in spatial data science and geomorphology. I am sure that he will use these skills well to help move us toward a better understanding of the landscape.

May 2024: I was extremely honoured to be invited to present a clinic on Fill-Spill-Merge at the CSDMS 2024 annual meeting. We spent time working through a Google Colab and talking about how FSM might be useful for different research ideas!

April 2024: Louis Quigley, an undergraduate student working in my lab, took first place for his category at the UIC Undergraduate Research Forum! He's been working on a really cool project to understand the relationships between depressions and other landscape characteristics.

August 2023: I'm so happy to welcome the first official graduate student to my group! Welcome, Mohammad, and I hope we'll do plenty of good research together.

May 2023: I attended the CSDMS annual meeting and was reminded of why I love this conference so much! Wow - there's no better place to connect and share research with others interested in modelling and the Earth surface.

April 2023: I visited UIUC and spoke about Hydrologic Connectivity in the United States at their Earth Science & Environmental Change Colloquium. It was lovely to be so welcomed and to discuss some ideas with the faculty there.

April 2023: Jeffrey Kwang came to visit and presented at our EAES seminar series. His work on the controls on landscape evolution is fascinating!

March 2023: I was happy to welcome my first invited speaker to UIC EAES's seminar series! Wolfgang Schwanghart, landscape evolution modeller and author of the TopoToolbox blog, visited and spoke about predicting landscape evolution.

January 2023: It's official! I've just started my new position as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois Chicago in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences . I look forward to getting my research group up and running and finding which new directions our research will take.

December 2023: I'm heading to AGU in Chicago for my first in-person conference since 2019! Looking forward to making those in-person connections and seeing some familiar (and many unfamiliar) faces.

September 2022: I had the opportunity to present at Lehigh University's weekly Earth Science seminar. I was able to visit in person and had some good conversations with both students and faculty members.

March 2022: I've accepted an Assistant Professor position at the University of Illinois Chicago! If all goes well, I'll be starting there in January next year.

February 2022: I was honoured to present at UCSC's Whole Earth Seminar . I had a wonderful time discussing my research!
